Topic: Hello!

Hi just joined this forum and wanted to introduce myself.  I have a small herd of horses and am interested in classical dressage.  I am a trained essential oil therapist and also work with herbal remedies, my horses are all barefoot.  My OH says I spend far too long on forums!  Recognise a few names on here from other forums, look forward to chatting to more people in the coming months.

Re: Hello!

Hi,

Welcome to our forums smile

Re: Hello!

Hi smile

Do you have someone trim your horse's feet or do you do it yourself? I ask because my friend has two Thoroughbreds and she is now moving to barefoot. She wants to trim their feet herself. Do you do this? smile

Re: Hello!

Hi smile  Nice to see you smile

Kelly, I would ALWAYS get advice from an experienced barefoot trimmer first to be honest.  Balancing the different structures, addressing flare etc is very important and I know of at least one person who has stuffed their horses feet up by just going ahead with a rasp.

That's not to say that owners can't trim but, imo, it should be done under supervision to start with.

Some of the main barefoot groups do courses for owners which would be a good starting point.

Re: Hello!

Yes good advice. My friend is having a barefoot trimmer out to check her horses feet and show her how to do it properly. Its a safer way to start off smile

Re: Hello!

Hello! I'm new smile

i though you HAD to have a registered farrie/barefoot faiier person trim feet?

Re: Hello!

No, you have to be a registered farrier to prepare hooves for shoeing but not if you're not going to apply shoes.

I would always use or trim under the supervision of a recognised and experienced barefoot trimmer.  It's always worth looking on the barefoot forums too as there's a lot of information and experience on there smile

Some of the main trimmers/organisations are:

EPAUK - http://www.epauk.org/

Peter Laidely - http://www.hoofworksaustralia.com/

UKNHCP - http://www.uknhcp.org/

Pete Ramey - http://www.hoofrehab.com/

KC La Pierre - http://www.appliedequinepodiatry.org/

Enlightened Equitation has a good archive of 'barefoot' threads although it isn't so prolific since the trimming organisations set up their own:

One of the EPAUK trimmers, Richard Vialls, has an excellent site which is well worth reading:
