Your First Article

This page describes how to create and add your article to our Equine Articles area.

Creating your new page

  1. Click on the Categories menu option and browse through the categories to find an appropriate location for your article.
  2. Think of a descriptive wiki page name for your article. The name should contain multiple words, with the first letter of each word capitalised and should not contain any spaces, e.g. YourFirstArticle.
  3. Enter your new page name in the box provided beneath the current list of pages in your chosen category and hit the Create button.
  4. You will then be asked for confirmation that you want to create the page. Click on the link to create the page.

Adding Content

  1. The edit box (shown to the right) will already contain some default text, follow the instructions in the text and do not delete the last two lines which place your article in your chosen category.
  2. Type your article in to the main body of the page. Remember to spell check your text.
  3. Click on the image toolbar button to add an image. Your image will need to already exist somewhere on the Internet, so upload it to your favourite photo site first (.e.g. photobucket, flickr, picasa) and then replace the "url" label with the web address of your image.
  4. Add links to websites you are referencing in your article using the link button on the toolbar.
  5. Use the Preview button to see what your article looks like.
  6. Click Store when you have done. Remember you can always come back and edit it later.

Formatting

Use the buttons on the toolbar to add formatting.
  • H1 through H5 are different levels of heading with H1 being the top level and therefore the largest, and H5 the smallest text.
  • Just like a word processor you can make text Bold, Italic, Underlined, Strikethrough.
  • You can add numbered lists (like the ones in the sections above) or bullet points (like this list).
  • When you add formatting via the toolbar you will notice it inserts special characters to represent the format, e.g. This Bold text will appear as **Bold**. You can type these special characters in rather than using the toolbar to insert them.

Using basic formatting will be enough for most people. If you want to become more of an expert and use all the available features, read FormattingRules

Making Changes To Your Article

If you want to update your article, simply browse to it via the categories and click the Edit link at the bottom of the page.

Protecting Your Article

If want to stop other members from editing your article:
  1. Store your page.
  2. Click the Edit ACLs link at the bottom of your article.
  3. In the Write ACL box, replace the + with your username.
  4. Click the Store ACLs button.
Now only you (and the website administrators) can change the content of your article.

And that's it. Easy isn't it?
