
Show Jumping Rules
For the Beijing Olympics 2008
The Rules:
- Horses need to be a minimum of 9 years old to take part.
- A bell is used to communicate with the rider to; enter the ring, to start the course, to start after an interruption and elimination.
- Riders are permitted to walk the course before the competition to judge the distance between jumps and remember the course sequence
- Red and white flags indicate turns on the course
- Jumps include: Spreads, Verticals and Water Jumps.
- Show Jumping is against the clock
Faults and Penalties:

For each jump knocked down (part of the jump falls to the ground) |

Hoof / Hooves leave impression in lath surrounding the water jump |

First refusal or if the horse runs out of the ring |

For every second/portion of second exceeding time allowed in 1st and 2nd rounds in jump offs not against clock |

For each second/portion of second exceeding time allowed in a jump off against the clock |
Jump-offs are held to determine winners if there is a tie.
Rules taken from the FEI regulations, which will be adhered to at the Beijing Olympics 2008.
